According to the Baymard Institute, 13% of cart abandonments happen because the store doesn't offer the user's preferred payment method. It seems small, but across millions of transactions, that's a massive amount of lost revenue.
The issue goes beyond preference: payment methods are tied to trust. A user who sees their usual method feels secure. One who has to enter card details on a gateway they don't recognize has doubts. And doubts at checkout are lethal for conversion.
Non-negotiable. Accept at least Visa, Mastercard, and depending on the market, American Express. Use a reliable processor (Stripe, Adyen) and display accepted card logos at checkout.
Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal eliminate the friction of manually entering data. On mobile, wallets can increase conversion between 10% and 30% by reducing checkout to a single tap.
Klarna, Afterpay, or Sequra let users split payment interest-free. The conversion impact is notable:
If you sell internationally, don't ignore local methods: iDEAL in the Netherlands, Bancontact in Belgium, PIX in Brazil, OXXO in Mexico. Not offering the local method is like closing the door on a significant market share.
Showing payment methods (especially BNPL) on the product page, not just at checkout, increases purchase intent. A message like "Pay in 3 interest-free installments of 33 USD" next to the price removes the price barrier before the user reaches the cart.
| Metric | Without BNPL | With BNPL |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion rate | Baseline | +20-30% |
| Average order value | Baseline | +15-20% |
| Cart abandonment | Baseline | -10-15% |
| Return rate | Baseline | +5-10% (more impulse buys) |
The trade-off is clear: more conversion and higher AOV in exchange for a slight increase in returns and the BNPL provider commission (typically 3-6%).
If you process cards, your processor must be PCI DSS compliant. If you use Stripe or Adyen, they handle this. Never store card data on your own server.
In addition to payment method logos, include at checkout: visible SSL seal, recognized gateway logos, accessible return policy, and privacy policy link.
