Klaviyo is a marketing automation platform built specifically for eCommerce. Founded in 2012, it has grown to power communications for more than 150,000 brands worldwide. Its key difference from generalist tools like Mailchimp or Brevo is that it puts product and purchase data at the center: it connects directly with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and other platforms to sync your catalog, order history, and real-time behavioral data.
The result is a platform where every email, SMS, or push notification can be personalized based on what the user has purchased, what they have browsed, how much they have spent, and when they last placed an order. This is particularly relevant for any conversion rate optimization strategy, where message relevance is one of the most decisive factors in outcomes.
Klaviyo lets you build dynamic segments by combining dozens of conditions: users who have purchased more than twice in the last 90 days, who have opened the last three emails but have not purchased, or who have visited a specific category without adding to cart. These segments update in real time and can be combined with engagement data to build high-intent audiences.
Flows are sequences of emails or SMS triggered by events. The most commonly used in eCommerce are:
Each step in a flow can include conditional splits based on the user's prior behavior within the same sequence.
Klaviyo unifies email and SMS in the same platform and the same flow. This makes it possible, for example, to send the first cart reminder by email and, if there is no open within two hours, follow up with an SMS. Consent management, unsubscribes, and segmentation are handled in a single interface.
The predictive analytics feature calculates metrics such as customer lifetime value (CLV), churn probability, and estimated date of next purchase. These data points can be used to prioritize segments or personalize offers, approaching RFM model logic but automated within the platform.
| Feature | Klaviyo | Mailchimp | Brevo | Omnisend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native eCommerce integration | Excellent | Basic | Medium | Good |
| Behavioral segmentation | Advanced | Basic | Medium | Advanced |
| SMS integrated | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| Predictive analytics | Yes | No | No | No |
| Price per contact | High | Medium | Low | Medium |
| Learning curve | Medium | Low | Low | Low |
Klaviyo is more expensive than Mailchimp or Brevo, but ROI tends to be higher in eCommerce due to the depth of segmentation and integration with order data. For smaller volumes or setups without eCommerce integration, Brevo or Mailchimp may be sufficient.
Email marketing and CRO reinforce each other when worked together. Klaviyo provides three capabilities that fit directly into an A/B testing process:
1. Flow variant testing. You can test two versions of the same email (subject line, content, timing) with automatically split traffic. Klaviyo calculates the winner by open rate, clicks, or revenue generated.
2. Segmentation for experiments. If you are testing a new checkout flow, you can exclude your highest-value customers from the experiment to avoid risking revenue while validating the hypothesis. Klaviyo allows you to export these segments or sync them with your testing tool.
3. Behavioral data for hypotheses. Abandoned cart flows reveal at which step abandonment occurs, which products have the highest abandonment rate, and what behavior characterizes users you do recover. This information directly feeds the prioritization of your CRO audit.
Klaviyo installs via the official app on Shopify or via API on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and others. The initial sync imports contacts, order history, and products. Once active, events (purchase, add_to_cart, view_product) arrive in real time.
To capture web behavioral events, Klaviyo installs a JavaScript snippet on the store. If you already use Google Tag Manager, you can manage this snippet from your GTM container to keep tracking centralized.
The priority order for launching flows in a new store should be: welcome series, abandoned cart, and post-purchase. These three flows together typically represent 60–80% of revenue attributable to the email channel.
Klaviyo can become expensive for large contact lists. Its pricing scales by number of active contacts, which can be a barrier for brands with many inactive subscribers. Regular list hygiene (suppressing inactives) is essential to control costs.
The platform also has a learning curve to take full advantage of all segmentation capabilities. Small teams without email marketing experience may need time to configure complex flows correctly.
Klaviyo is the reference tool for email and SMS marketing in eCommerce. Its segmentation depth, native integration with commerce platforms, and predictive analytics capabilities make it a revenue lever that is hard to match. Combined with an eCommerce conversion optimization strategy, the impact on conversion rate can be significant from the first months.
If you want to review whether your marketing automation stack is configured to maximize conversion, start with a CRO audit. At Boost we work with eCommerce teams to connect tools like Klaviyo with experimentation processes that generate measurable results. You can also analyze your website for free with Scan&Boost.
