Mid Funnel Marketing: Key Tactics and Metrics

79% of marketing leads never convert into a sale (MarketingSherpa, 2025). The problem isn't lead generation — it's what happens, or doesn't happen, in the mid funnel.

Most marketing teams focus their efforts on two extremes: generating awareness (top funnel) and closing sales (bottom funnel). What's left in between — the mid funnel — is where the most valuable opportunities are lost. This article explains how to work this stage strategically.

What is mid funnel marketing (MOFU)

The mid funnel, also known as MOFU (Middle of Funnel), is the consideration stage of the conversion funnel. The user already knows your brand or your solution, but hasn't decided to buy yet. They're evaluating options, comparing alternatives and looking for reasons to trust you.

The full funnel in context

StageNameUser stateGoal
Top funnel (TOFU)AwarenessDoesn't know your brand or doesn't know they have a problemCapture attention, educate
Mid funnel (MOFU)ConsiderationKnows they have a problem and is evaluating solutionsNurture, build trust, differentiate
Bottom funnel (BOFU)DecisionReady to buy, comparing final optionsConvince, close the sale

The most common mistake is treating the funnel as if it only has two states: "doesn't know me" and "wants to buy." The reality is that most users spend considerable time in the mid funnel before making a decision. Ignoring this stage is like inviting someone to dinner and forgetting to prepare the food.

Why the mid funnel is critical for conversion

The gap between lead and customer

A lead who downloads an ebook isn't a customer. They're someone who has shown surface-level interest. Without a nurturing process that guides them from that initial interest to a purchase decision, most of those leads go cold and disappear.

The data proves it

  • 50% of qualified leads aren't ready to buy at the time of first contact (Gleanster Research)
  • Companies that implement nurturing generate 50% more sales at 33% lower cost (Forrester)
  • Nurtured leads make purchases 47% larger than non-nurtured ones (Annuitas Group)

These numbers tell a clear story: the difference between a pipeline that converts and one that doesn't lies in how you work the mid funnel.

MOFU content: what works

Mid funnel content has a specific goal: help the user evaluate your solution as the best option. It's not awareness content (generic, educational, no mention of your product). Nor is it direct sales content (pricing, features, buy CTA).

Effective MOFU content types

1. Case studies Nothing builds more trust than demonstrating real results with clients similar to the prospect. A good case study includes: client context, identified problem, solution applied, measurable results and timeline.

2. Honest comparisons The user is going to compare anyway. If you provide the comparison, you control the frame of reference. Include your solution alongside real alternatives, with pros and cons of each. Honesty builds more trust than marketing.

3. Webinars and demos They allow the user to see your product or service in action without the commitment of a sales meeting. Webinars with live Q&A are especially effective because they address objections in real time.

4. Implementation guides Content that shows what it would be like to work with you or use your product. It reduces uncertainty and makes tangible what was previously abstract.

5. Calculators and interactive tools ROI calculators, product configurators or assessment tools that help the user quantify the value of your solution for their specific case.

6. Sequenced email nurturing Email sequences that progressively deepen: from educational content to social proof, from social proof to differentiated value proposition, from value proposition to conversion CTA.

Mid funnel tactics that work

Email nurturing

The backbone of mid funnel for most companies. A well-designed nurturing sequence accompanies the lead over weeks or months, providing value in every interaction.

Recommended structure:

WeekContentGoal
1Educational resource related to the lead's problemReinforce that you understand their problem
2Case study from a similar clientBuild trust with social proof
3Comparison or evaluation guideHelp with option evaluation
4Webinar or recorded demoMake the solution tangible
5Differentiation content (why you vs. others)Position your solution as the best
6Offer or conversion CTATrigger the decision

Retargeting

Mid funnel retargeting targets users who have interacted with your TOFU content but haven't converted. Retargeting campaigns with MOFU content (case studies, testimonials, demos) have 10x higher CTR than standard display.

MOFU retargeting segments:

  • Product page visitors who didn't buy
  • Users who downloaded a TOFU resource
  • Pricing page visitors
  • Users who started a process (sign-up, checkout) and abandoned it

Lead scoring

Assigning a score to each lead based on their behavior helps identify when a MOFU lead is ready to move to BOFU. Actions that add points:

  • Opening nurturing emails (+5 points per email)
  • Clicking on MOFU content CTAs (+10)
  • Visiting the pricing page (+20)
  • Downloading a case study (+15)
  • Requesting a demo (+30)
  • Visiting the contact page (+25)

When the lead reaches a defined threshold (e.g., 80 points), the handoff to sales or direct conversion CTA is triggered.

Strategic social proof

In the mid funnel, social proof isn't a generic logo on your homepage. It's relevant and specific social proof for the lead's segment:

  • Testimonials from clients in the same industry
  • Specific result metrics (not "we improved conversions" but "we increased checkout conversion by 34% in 8 weeks")
  • Reviews and ratings on third-party platforms (G2, Trustpilot, Capterra)
  • Badges, certifications and relevant partnerships

Mid funnel metrics

Measuring the mid funnel isn't as intuitive as measuring awareness (impressions) or conversion (sales). But without metrics, you're flying blind.

Engagement metrics

MetricWhat it measuresIndicative benchmark
Email open rate (nurturing)Interest in your content25-40%
Email CTR (nurturing)Depth of interest3-8%
Time on page (MOFU content)Quality of attention>3 minutes
MOFU content downloadsEvaluation intentDepends on volume
Webinar attendanceActive commitment30-50% of registrants

Progression metrics

MetricWhat it measuresWhy it matters
MQL to SQL conversion rate% of marketing leads that pass to salesQuality of nurturing
Pipeline velocityAverage time from MOFU to BOFUMid funnel efficiency
Lead scoring velocitySpeed at which leads accumulate pointsSignal of growing intent
Content influenceMOFU content that appears in conversion journeysIdentifies what content works

The metric that matters most

MQL to SQL conversion rate (Marketing Qualified Lead to Sales Qualified Lead). If you're generating lots of MQLs but few pass to SQL, your mid funnel isn't nurturing properly. The benchmark varies by industry, but a healthy range is between 15% and 30%.

How to optimize mid funnel conversion

1. Segment your nurturing

Not all leads are equal. A lead who arrived searching "what is CRO" needs different content than one who arrived searching "best CRO agency Barcelona." Segment your nurturing sequences by intent, acquisition source and behavior.

2. Personalize content

Use the data you have about the lead (industry, company size, website behavior) to personalize MOFU content. A case study from their industry is 3x more effective than a generic one.

3. Reduce friction at every step

Every mid funnel interaction should be easy and low-commitment. Don't ask for a sales meeting when the lead just wants to see a case study. Gradually escalate the level of commitment.

4. Align marketing and sales

The marketing-to-sales handoff is the most critical point. Clearly define when a lead is ready for sales (lead scoring), what information the sales team receives and how the transition is made.

5. Measure and optimize constantly

A/B testing in nurturing emails, MOFU landing page optimization, experimentation with content formats. The mid funnel is an iterative process, not a static setup.

The mid funnel is where conversions are won or lost. It's not enough to generate leads and hope they buy on their own. You need a deliberate nurturing strategy, relevant content and metrics that allow you to optimize continuously.
